CIRCUIT Symposium / Artist Cinema Commissions

This years CIRCUIT Symposium and Artist Cinema Commissions are presented at Pataka Art + Museum, Porirua on 23/24 October.

Both projects are titled entitled Sovereign Pacific / Pacific Sovereigns, and have been curated by our international curator-at-large David Teh. Register online here.

Sovereign Pacific / Pacific Sovereigns seeks to explore how sovereignty is inscribed in art – on page, on screen, in space, on bodies, and in the natural world. Is it altered by contemporary media? Which histories does it invoke, and which does it counter? How is artistic sovereignty being recalibrated by our mounting global crises?

David Teh is a curator and Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore, specialising in Southeast Asian contemporary art. David's previous curatorial projects include Returns, a project for the 12th Gwangju Biennale (2018), Misfits: Pages from a Loose-leaf Modernity (Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, 2017) and Unreal Asia (55. Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen, 2009). Due to the limitations imposed by Covid 19, David will participate in AURA 2020 via Zoom.

The Symposium keynote is Dr Carl Mika, with confirmed speakers including David Teh, Alex Monteith, Rachel Rakena, Sorawit Songsataya, Vera Mey and more. Symposium registration is $40 waged, and $10 for Students, Unwaged and CIRCUIT Artists. Advance registration includes a light lunch. Register online here.

The Artist Cinema Commissions include new works by Rangituhia Hollis, Ana Iti, Alex Monteith, Sione Monu and Gary-Ross Pastrana (Philippines). Attendance is free for this once-only screening.

Both events are presented as part of AURA Festival of Moving Images, an annual festival CIRCUIT first staged in 2019 as an umbrella for our annual Symposium and related projects. With the advent of Covid 19, AURA 2020 has scaled to a focussed dialogue between 5 new artist commissions and a one-day academic symposium.

We hope AURA visitors attend both the screening and the symposium, both of which respond to the same conceptual prompts.

Many thanks to our partners Pātaka Art + Museum for their collaboration in presenting AURA 2020. Support from Creative New Zealand.
