Janet Lilo

b. 1982

Janet Lilo b. 1982, Auckland. Nga Puhi, Apia & Alofi. Hi my name is Janet Lilo, I was born and raised in central/ west Auckland and graduated with a Master of Art & Design majoring in video & installation art from AUT University.

In my practice, it is a pleasure and a passion of mine to explore all the little things that contribute to how we formulate identity; namely through popular culture, the places we live in and the things that’s consume our everyday.

I believe in making art that is simple, playful, accessible and dynamic. I like to think that the art I create will not only stand up to an audience that is academically informed, but more importantly to people from different intellectual abilities, cultures and ages.

My objective is to engage, involve, research and educate diverse communities using visual art and creative processes as a platform for learning and empowerment.

I’m a proud mother and guardian to two awesome boys, a coordinator for Pacific post-graduate students at the University of Auckland and a board member of the Tautai Contemporary Pacific Arts Trust - as well as a visual artist.
