Samantha Cheng is an artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa. Across site-specific installation, moving image, and performance, Samantha’s practice is an earnest consideration of community, time, and labour in a capitalist world. Through a joyous experimentation underpinned by failure and absurdity, Samantha seeks out and devises humourous encounters in the everyday. These encounters inform a generative space for making performative gestures that operate as an open rehearsal for the real world. Samantha has a Master of Visual Arts (2021) from Auckland University of Technology.
Recent exhibitions include the group shows Back Room (The Arts House Trust, 2024), Maximum Potential NOW (Blue Oyster Art Project Space, 2024), and the activation Passengers (2023) which was held on the western line of the Auckland Transport service as part of Rumpus (Chez Derriere, 2023).
