CIRCUIT is pleased to announce an open call for proposals from Indian artists to make a short moving image work for cinema. We are seeking proposals which respond to dialogues around the theme of ‘Possession’.

Possession is a programme of 5 artist works for cinema. The final programme will feature four works by artists from Aotearoa, and one work, in response, collusion, reflection or echoing, from India.

Possession is curated by Anuj Malhotra, a filmmaker, critic and curator based in New Delhi and CIRCUIT's 2026 International Curator-at-large. Read more about Anuj here.

How will the project begin?

The selected artist will be given a text developed by Anuj on the theme of Possession, which is considered a starting point for the artists own exploration. See the application form for more thematic prompts.

During the development of the project there will be periodic online meetings with the four New Zealand artists and curator Anuj Malhotra. The artists are invited to share ideas around their response to the theme, and to learn from each other's approaches to conceptual development, production and cultural context.

In the spirit of cultural exchange which this project seeks to the cultivate, this project also invites the artist to engage with the elaborate repository of moving image works that CIRCUIT has harnessed and managed over the years, which exists both as a repository of artists, works, ideas and communities. CIRCUIT Director Mark Williams will be available to guide the artist through the CIRCUIT archive, and will work with the artist to support a logic of engagement that also speaks to the artists’ own practice and concerns.

Who can apply?

Through this open call, we are looking for an artist based out of India who works primarily with time-based or image-based forms to create a short single channel film up to 15 minutes in length.

What is the fee?

The fee is NZ$4000.00. CIRCUIT will seek to generate ongoing distribution revenue for the artists through future screenings.

What is the deadline to complete the work?

10 October 2026.

Where will the work be shown?

Following premiere screenings of Possession in New Zealand, CIRCUIT and Anuj will seek opportunities at venues in India and internationally.
