CIRCUIT and Tāhuhu Kōrero Toi Art History at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington are excited to invite expressions of interest for a new series of writing commissions aimed at current students and recent graduates.

The Masons Screen Summer Writing Commissions for 2025 are a series of three texts that will each respond to one of the moving image artworks commissioned for Masons Screen, a permanent public outdoor site for artists’ moving image in Pōneke. In 2024/25, the selected artists are Nat Tozer, Claus Lucas and Wesley John Fourie, whose works will be shown on Masons Screen for a period of six weeks each from December 2024 to April 2025.

Former and current VUW students are invited to submit an expression of interest to complete a new text of up to 1000 words, to be published on CIRCUIT’s website. Three selected writers will each be paired with one of the commissioned artworks, and work with CIRCUIT’s editor on the development of a written response for publication in autumn 2025. The successful writers will each be paid $400.

For emerging writers, this is an opportunity to offer the first response to a new moving image work, to work with a professional editor to hone your skills, and have your writing published on a widely respected platform.

Note: this call for proposals is open to writers who are current or former Victoria University of Wellington students, in their third year of studies or above. It is aimed at writers starting out in their careers, having had no more than four articles about the arts published in print or online. This does not include self-publishing. There is no age limit for applicants.

To apply, please submit:

  • A brief bio and short writing sample (1000 words maximum). This can be a whole article/text, or an extract, and could be previously published or unpublished.
