A Woman On A Mission (2008)

9 min 51 secSingle channel / Digital Video / Colour / Sound

"The protagonist moves through different phases of isolated, idle behaviour that eventually leads to the creation of a spontaneous, temporary sculpture. Goal-oriented action is abandoned as boredom becomes both subject matter and the (likely) experience of the audience. Taken with the location for the video–an empty parking lot with a burnt-out car (which later becomes the plinth for the sculpture)–the sense that something meaningful has already happened or is happening elsewhere takes hold. Just as setting fire to property suggests rebellion or disobedience, the lackadaisical body language of the woman stands in stark contrast to the overwhelming societal impulse to be productive."
