Stephanie Beth is a film-maker based in Christchurch. Her first two films I want to be Joan (1977) and IN JOY (1980) are described as companion pieces, each seeking to portray the reality and potential of womens' lives through a documentary lens.

'IN JOY' looks at the facilitator Maggie Eyre working in theatre classes of improvisation, play, and performance for human growth. Influenced by trends in Improv coined in psychotheraputic circles then, I saw a chance to address ways for ‘sapiens’ to do work on their body with techniques that help overcome experiences with violence. I contracted Maggie Eyre and co-scheduled a five day workshop to film ten willing workshop attendees.
