Muramura is a visual representation of where life starts—inside the whare tangata—created through a layering of imagery that brings together whenua, water and close-ups of a mouth that performs a karakia as spoken word poetry. Vivid tones of mākurakura (magenta) symbolise tapu bloodline and whakapapa, connecting us back to whenua me o ngā tūpuna. The taonga pūoro ngā tumutumu (wood and river-stone musical instruments) and underwater sounds from a hydrophone are overlaid to create a soundscape inspired by the inside of the womb—a safe and beautiful space that holds glowing potential and the building blocks of an individual’s mātauranga Māori journey, as yet unconditioned by social constructs.
