"Nicholas Girls shows the entwined and mutually sustaining dynamics of humour and anxiety. As a very small child I did not get this joke. Having no sense of shame about my genitals, I could only interpret the punch line as good advice for avoiding awkward grazes while tree climbing. Shame in my body and fear of being photographed or recorded came later, instilled through jokes. Painfully aware of humour as a disciplinary force, I still can’t resist the libratory joys of wielding it myself."
