Pan of Trees (2011)

53 secSingle channel / Digital Video / Colour / Silent

Pan of Trees shows a frying pan sitting on a plate. The pan has a layer of liquid that reflects the leaves of a tree that move in the wind.

Connections can be drawn between Parkes’ video works and her collages, which are pieced together from found images, wrapping paper, dried paint, and other materials accumulated in Parkes’ life—both inside and outside of her studio. From these materials, Parkes creates visually disruptive collages that reflect, layer, and bleed into each other. Video works such as Pan of Trees, though they are in a different medium, can be viewed as precursors to the later collages, as they show similar visual disruptions: moments when images contain other images, or when a surface is infected by light, colour, or another material.
