Against an audio backdrop of twinkling synthesisers and industrial roar, a solitary figure emerges naked from a scree slope. Travelling to an unpeopled city, 'Otto' swims in the fitness centre, smokes a cigarette, walks through an industrial basement and turns the pages of a scrapbook showing images from Egyptian mythology. Who is Otto? What is this place? Why is he here?
The Search for Otto was made for the play I wrote of the same name. The play, The Search for Otto, was performed at the Auckland School of Architecture's Design Theatre from 28 February to Saturday 8 1986. The film is also a standalone work and has been shown at a number of events including the 1987 Experimental Film/Video festival in Japan, organised by Image Forum, and Images in Motion at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in 1990.
