John Hamilton was responsible for driving Waikato Māori off their land for occupation and settlement of Pākehā. In 1864 Kirikiriroa was renamed, Hamilton, in honour of him. His statue was gifted to Hamilton in 2013 before being removed in 2020 by locals due to his symbol of racism and oppression following the Black Lives Matter Movement."
