CIRCUIT at Oberhausen Short Film Festival 2023

Five works by Aotearoa artists will screen at the 69th Oberhausen Short Film Festival in Germany.

CIRCUIT is proud to present a showcase of recent works from Aotearoa in the distributors’ section at the Oberhausen Short Film Festival, Germany in April 2023.

Oberhausen is one of the world's leading festival platforms for new artists' cinema. Each year, they present a competition programme, film-maker spotlights and a series of screenings by international distributors.

On Friday 28 April at 21.45 CIRCUIT will present a programme of work by:

  • Edith Amituanai

  • Juliet Carpenter

  • Martin Sagadin

  • Ukrit Sa-nguanhai

  • Sriwhana Spong

The programme consists of five films commissioned by CIRCUIT: four from Legacies, our 2022 programme of artist cinema commissions, alongside a work by Frankfurt-based artist Juliet Carpenter that was commissioned for the exhibition Otherwise-image-worlds in partnership with Te Uru.

Entitled Dizzy (2022), Carpenter’s vertiginous short film revels in the indeterminate space between deadness and liveness, animate and inanimate. This work will be seen in a programme that also includes Edith Amituanai’s portrait of a young Pasifika matriarch; Ukrit Sa-nguanhai’s reflection on the cinematic history of Thailand; Martin Sagadin’s study of an artist sculpting clay in their studio; and an animation based on a Balinese painting made by Sriwhana Spong’s grandfather.

Elsewhere at Oberhausen, Pati Tyrell’s commission from the Legacies programme, Tulouna le Lagi (2022), will screen in the international competition section for the Grand Prize of the City of Oberhausen.
