Christopher Ulutupu is the recipient of the 2022 Tagata Moana Moving Image Award.
Presented by CIRCUIT with support from TAUTAI, Berwick Film and Media Arts Festival (BFMAF) and Creative New Zealand, this commission will support Chris to create a new single channel moving image work to premiere at the 18th BFMAF in the UK in March 2023.
Chris will also be supported to travel to the Festival where his work will screen alongside a programme of new contemporary international artists’ cinema.
CIRCUIT Director Mark Williams says, "The quality of Berwick's programming is known worldwide, and Chris is a fantastic artist. I think this is a great opportunity not only for Chris but also for that international community to see cinema's potential from a South Pacific perspective."
Williams says TAUTAI were instrumental in backing the project, being involved in the call for proposals and the selection process. TAUTAI will host the premiere of the work in Aotearoa in 2022/23. "It was important to us to have Pasifika voices in the selection process, and we are excited to continue the partnership with TAUTAI when we present the work."

Christopher Ulutupu is an artist of Samoan/Niuean/German descent currently residing in Wellington. His work re-examines Colonial imagery of people and landscape, which he revisits through a richly pop and celebratory Pacific lens.
