Wairoa Māori Film Festival 2022

Natasha Matila-Smith, Kauri Wharewera, Rangituhia Hollis, and Layne Waerea show works on the Kahungungu marae.

CIRCUIT is proud to partner with Wairoa Māori Film Festival to screen four works by Ngāti Kahungungu artists at the 2022 festival.

Natasha Matila-Smith, Kauri Wharewera, Rangituhia Hollis, and Layne Waerea will all show works at the Toi Nuhaka Art Gallery on the Kahungungu marae.

Wairoa is the longest-running indigenous film festival of New Zealand, and takes place at several festival venues across Wairoa and Nuhaka. As well as the CIRCUIT artist works, the festival has a full programme of local and international films, entertainment, a high tea celebration, and gala events.

The festival Director Leo Koziol (Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Rakaipaaka) is founder and director of the Wairoa Māori Film Festival. Leo is also CIRCUIT’s Matariki curator, and has recently commissioned a new work for Wellington public art space Masons Screen that will premiere in July 2022.

A person is jogging across a grassy field in the early morning. The landscape is covered in thick fog, blurring the horizon line. We can see the red glow from sunrise. The person running appears slightly mid-air, in between steps. The dawn makes them look like a silhouette on the land. The grass is covered in dew or frost.
