Opening on Rāhoroi 4 June at Te Uru Waitākere Contemporary Gallery is Otherwise-image-worlds, an exhibition of five brand new moving images works by artists Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley, Juliet Carpenter, Tanu Gago, Ary Jansen, and Sorawit Songsataya.
Otherwise-image-worlds is commissioned by CIRCUIT in partnership with Te Uru and curated by Tendai Mutambu, one of CIRCUIT’s 2022 Curators-at-large. The exhibition asks what modes of interaction, imagination, attention, and refusal animation can cultivate.
For nearly two centuries animation has been expanding and reconfiguring the conventions of image-making to create new experiences in the realms of art and entertainment: from science-fiction and speculative narratives to cartoon- and video game-based worlds.
Where the polish and ease of contemporary image economies work to obscure power structures, Otherwise-image-worlds experiments with how the making and circulation of animation can be oppositional in playful, oblique, and sometimes-awkward ways.

Artist Cinema Commissions
Every year, CIRCUIT works with a curator-at-large to commission five new moving image artworks for cinema. Otherwise-image-worlds moves the annual project into the realm of expanded cinema, using the parameters of the gallery to examine the possibilities of the moving image.
Another suite of five new works for cinema, curated by May Adadol Ingawanij, will premiere at Artspace Aotearoa in September.
