Tai Timu! Tai Pari! The Tide Ebbs, the Tide Flows

Recent artists' moving image work from Aotearoa exploring indigenous histories and current discourse through an array of filmic languages.

Tai timu! Tai pari! brings together a collection of recent artists’ film and video from Aotearoa New Zealand, curated by Shannon Te Ao in collaboration with CIRCUIT Artist Film and Video Aotearoa New Zealand. Originally accompanying Te Ao’s exhibition Ka mua, ka muri at Remai Modern, Saskatoon, in 2020, this programme includes works by:

  • Janet Lilo

  • Neihana Gordon–Stables

  • Jamie Berry

  • Natasha Matila-Smith

  • Layne Waerea

  • Ana Iti

  • Jeremy Leatinu’u

  • Nova Paul

The works respond to Indigenous histories and current discourse through an array of filmic languages. They explore issues such as language revitalisation, the commodification of natural resources, indigenous representation within film histories, and queer narratives.

Tai timu! Tai pari! screens continuously in the City Gallery auditorium, and accompanies the exhibition Matarau that Te Ao has curated for City Gallery Wellington Te Whare Toi.

A person is jogging across a grassy field in the early morning. The landscape is covered in thick fog, blurring the horizon line. We can see the red glow from sunrise. The person running appears slightly mid-air, in between steps. The dawn makes them look like a silhouette on the land. The grass is covered in dew or frost.
