Rozana Lee

Lines of separation (2021)

7 minutes 54 secondsSingle channel / Digital Video / Colour / Sound

This video documents Lee’s day trip to her ancestral homeland in Huizhou, a city where mountains meet winding rivers along the northern shore of the South China Sea. A stranger to the place and its people, she wanders through the oldest surviving settlement, imagining her ancestors once living in one of these timeworn homes. As she moves through the village, a friend hums songs by Teresa Teng, whose music has long resonated with the Southeast Asian diaspora, while she recites collection of poems by her other friend, M. Farzaneh, conjuring reflections on displacement, longing, and the quiet hope of rediscovering oneself through movement.
