Sam Hamilton

Sam Hamilton is an artist from Auckland Aotearoa / New Zealand who is currently based in Portland, OR, USA.

Over the past 12 years he has worked across film, sculpture, photography and sound. Hamilton describes his artistic practice as “pluralistic, modular and nomadic. A complex of elastic generalism perpetually oscillating between the outward expansion of defined lines of flight and the cyclical collapse of things back to systemic coherence.”

Hamilton has worked with artists, dance companies, scientists, musicians and film-makers in locations around the globe from Finland to Samoa. He has performed, presented and screened his work in settings includings ancient Italian opera houses, an abandoned Greek school in central Athens, the Australian outback desert, contemporary art triennials, punky DIY bike shops in Arizona, giant outdoor sculpture parks, warehouse dance parties, city art museums, bookstores and an underground car park.

Hamilton is currently completing Apple Pie, a 70-minute film shot in New Zealand and Samoa. Using ten of the main astronomical objects of our solar system to orientate and give structure to its investigation, Apple Pie seeks to “figure out and re-imagine the mechanisms by which certain aspects of scientific knowledge are digested, appropriated and subsequently manifest within the general human complex.” - SH

In addition to his fine art practice he has also made a number of music videos related to his music practice that sometimes draw on motifs relative to his film, video and image making practice, including Integrifolia - Perennial TraditionsUbuntu; Alumbra Tides
